  1.                                 KEYBOARD CONTROLS
  2.  
  3. [ESC]      - Exits from a task and returns to the menu.
  4. [Enter]    - When pressed at a menu prompt, it allows the user
  5.              to access the ten previous entries for that prompt.
  6.              The entries will be displayed in a window.  Use the
  7.              arrow keys to scroll through them & select one with [Enter].
  8. [TAB]      - Toggles between windows if the screen is split.
  9.              The window with the "*" is active. Any reads,
  10.              searches or saves are performed in the active window.
  11. Up arrow   - Scrolls back to preceding verse.
  12. Down arrow - Scrolls next verse to the top line.
  13. [Page Up]  - Displays the five preceding verses.
  14. [Page Dn]  - Displays the next page of verses beginning with bottom verse.
  15. [Home]     - Displays the beginning of the current chapter.  When pressed
  16.              thereafter, it displays verse 1 of the NEXT chapter.  In the
  17.              search mode, it displays the first verse that contains the
  18.              search pattern.
  19. Ctrl[Home] - Displays verse 1 of the PRECEDING chapter or back to verse 1
  20.              of the current chapter if currently in another part of it.
  21. [End]      - Displays the last verse of the current chapter.  In the
  22.              search mode, it displays the last verse that contains the
  23.              search pattern and the next verse when in display context.
  24. Ctrl[m][s] - Allows one to perform a function of any other menu without
  25.              leaving the current menu level.  For example, to divide
  26.              the text window from the Search submenu, hold down the [Ctrl]
  27.              key and press [W] to select "Window".  Then, let go of [Ctrl]
  28.              and press [D] to select "Divide" (in Window menu).
  29.                                FUNCTION KEYS
  30.  
  31. F1=Help - Provides help.                 F5=Last - Display book's last verse.
  32. F2=Info - Displays extra information.    F6=Clear - Clears the text
  33. F3=Books - Displays the books of the       window and search information.
  34.   Bible and their abbreviations.         F7=Display mode - Toggles between
  35. F4=First - Displays the first verse of     verses, context and excerpt
  36.   the current book; however, if verse 1    modes, during a search.
  37.   of a book is already at the top of       F8=Repeat - Repeats the last
  38.   the text window, it will display the     search (unless cleared by F6).
  39.   beginning of the NEXT book.            F9=Verse save - Writes the top
  40. Ctrl F4  - Displays verse 1 of the         verse to the printer or saves
  41.   PRECEDING book or beginning of current   it to the open file.
  42.   book while reading any part of it.     F10=Quit - Exit and close files.
  43.                                  MAIN MENU

  45. Read - Prompts for a three letter book abbreviation followed by the chapter
  46.        and verse separated by a colon (i.e. MAT 1:1). Entering the three word
  47.        abbreviation by itself--e.g., "LUK"--will display the beginning of
  48.        that book.  Entering the abbreviation plus "*:*" will display
  49.        the last verse of that book--e.g., "LUK *:*".
  50. Verse save - If no disk file has been opened then the verse positioned at
  51.        the top of the active window will be sent to the printer, in which
  52.        case the text that appears highlighted on the screen will be
  53.        underlined when printed on the printer.  Otherwise, the verse is
  54.        sent to the disk file.
  55. Quit - All open files are closed and the program exits back to DOS.

  57.                                  SEARCH MENU
  58.  
  59.  
  60. Find - Searches for word(s) as specified by the user (see the "Search
  61.        Parameters" section below) and displays the corresponding verses
  62.        on the screen with the word(s) highlighted.
  63. Write all - Saves all the verses found in a search to a file.  The user
  64.        is prompted to enter a file name, if no file was previously opened.
  65. Define block - Defines the block range for a search.  When starting up the
  66.        NASCB program, this range is set as GEN 1:1 - REV 22:21 and remains so
  67.        until reset through "Define block."  Then, as long as it is running,
  68.        the program retains the most recent block range setting.
  69.          To conduct a search in two or more books that are next to each
  70.        other, simply type the book abbreviations.  For example, to search
  71.        Matthew and Mark, enter "MAT" as the starting point and "MAR" as the
  72.        end of the range.
  73.          To conduct a search in one whole book, enter the book abbreviation
  74.        twice.
  75. Block save - Saves the defined block to a file, or allows the user to
  76.        select a different block to save.  (Changing the block under "Block
  77.        save" will not alter the defined block.)

  80.                                Search Parameters

  82. I.  Wildcarding
  83.  
  84.     A. The asterisk [*] allows you to enter a root word, prefix or
  85.        suffix (etc.) at the "Find" prompt in order to obtain a listing
  86.        of all variations (that are in the NASB).  For example, enter:
  87.             *GOD*
  88.        and the following list will appear:
  89.             Gudgodah              ungodliness            ungodly
  90.        Enter:
  91.             GOD*
  92.        and the following words appear:
  93.             GOD                   God                    God's
  94.             God-fearing           god                    goddess
  95.             godless               godlessness            godliness
  96.        Press [Enter] to select one search word from the list.

  98.     B. The question mark [?] functions the same as the asterisk EXCEPT
  99.        it allows you to specify the exact length of the words you want.
  100.        For example, enter:
  101.             LOVE??
  102.        and the following list of six-character words will be displayed:
  103.             love's                lovely                 lovers
  104.  
  105.     C. The open parenthesis [(] automatically searches for all variations
  106.        of the word or partial word entered.  The format is as follows
  107.        (using "GOD" as an example).

  109.        1.  (GOD*  - finds all words begin with "GOD".
  110.        2.  (GOD???? - finds all words beginning with "GOD" that are
  111.                       seven characters in length.

  137. III. Appending to a Search
  138.  
  139.           The plus [+] symbol is used strictly for appending to the
  140.      current search.  Say, for example, you have already searched
  141.      for JOHN.  Some possible appendages to this search are shown here:
  142.           1.  +BAPTIST            Eliminates verses from the search
  143.                                   which do not contain BAPTIST.
  144.           2.  +#BAPTIST           Eliminates verses containing BAPTIST
  145.                                   from the search.
  146.           3.  +|BAPTIST           Adds to the search those verses which
  147.                                   contain BAPTIST (but not JOHN).
  148.  
  149. IV.  Conducting a Phrase Search
  150.  
  151.           The double quote ["] symbol signals the NASCB program to
  152.      search for a specific phrase.  E.g., upon entering:
  153.           "JOHN THE BAPTIST
  154.      the NASCB will search for verses containing that exact phrase.
  155.                                    FILES MENU
  156.  
  157. Open - Opens a file to which verses may be saved. This is an ASCII format
  158.        (.TXT) file which may be read by a word processor.  If the file
  159.        already exists then verses may be added to it.
  160. Close - Closes an open file and saves it to the disk.  It will only appear
  161.        in the menu if a file is open.
  162. Remove - Permanently removes a file from your disk.
  163. Editor - Opens a small text editor, for adding notes to a .TXT file.  If
  164.        a file is currently open, it will automatically use that file.
  165.        Use [TAB] to toggle between the editor and the text.
  166.        The editor will put in temporary carriage returns (<CR>s)
  167.        for display purposes; then, when the text file is saved, the
  168.        NASCB strips out all single <CR>s.  (Consecutive <CR>s are kept.)
  169. Print  - Prints the contents of a .TXT file to the printer.
  170. Directory  - Lists all the files with the extension TXT in the data drive.
  171. Access DOS - Creates a DOS window to allow the user to perform DOS
  172.        functions.  To exit the DOS window and return to the NASCB
  173.        screen, type EXIT.

  176.                                  WINDOWS MENU
  177.  
  178. Divide - Splits the screen into two halves.  The [TAB] key is used to move
  179.        back and forth between windows.  The active window will have an
  180.        * above it. The windows are independent of each other.
  181. Combine - Combines the two text windows into one text window, and retains
  182.        only the contents of the active text window (see "Divide,"
  183.        above).  Thus, the contents of the other (inactive) text
  184.        window will be dropped.
  185. Synchronize scroll - Allows verses in both windows to be scrolled
  186.        simultaneously.

  188.                                   OPTIONS MENU
  189.  
  190. Color - If you are using a color monitor then you may alter the color
  191.        configurations.  This command will always re-draw the screen for
  192.        monochrome and color monitors.
  193. Data drive - Allows you to name the directory to which your files will be
  194.        saved.  If you have a word processor it is recommended that the
  195.        subdirectory of you word processor files be used.  An example
  196.        would be (C:\WP\DATA\).
  197. Format printer - Allows the user to enter margins and printer codes.
  198.        The option to underline the search pattern is set here also.  The
  199.        decimal control sequence to enable underline for the printer must
  200.        be entered. The format for the sequence is :
  201.            #[code value]+#[code]+ ... +#[code]
  202.        where the "#" is needed and designates that code value is decimal.
  203.        The default control sequence is for OKIDATA printers.  The control
  204.        code sequence can be found in your printer's manual.
  205. Save changes - Saves all the option selections to the program's CONFIG.BIB
  206.        configuration file.
